Sunset on Burnet Bay January 22, 2021 – I took this photo with the slightly choppy water on the bay as the sun was setting above the Sam Houston Toll Road Ship Channel\u00a0 bridge and thought that was it for the night.\u00a0 Glanced up another 40 minutes later to see the water surface was calm with a nice reflection for the photo below. Eight Brown Pelicans heading south on Burnet Bay at sunset.\u00a0 These Pelicans are conserving energy by gliding just above the surface of the water using the built up cushion of air between their wings and the water surface for additional lift. This phenomenon is called the ground effect.\u00a0 The US military spent much time and money attempting to do this with aircraft but found at high speed this close to the water, it was not practical to control the aircraft and keep from dipping a wing into the water and crashing . The pelicans also fly in a line – less air resistance for the ones behind the lead – they take turns being in the lead allowing the lead bird to drop back and rest.\u00a0 Can you find the dragonfly that found its way into the photo?<\/p>\r\n
